"Just because we have additive manufacturing, we should not be blowing up kaizen, 5S, lean manufacturing," and other basics of sound production, says Nate Higgins of FreeFORM Technologies. He and co-founder Chris Aiello took me on a tour of their St. Mary's, PA, production operations employing binder jetting via several machines from Desktop Metal, along with metal injection molding and MoldJet capability from Tritone Technologies. Rather than adapting production methods to AM, the Freefrom team has developed a production-focused additive business by adapting AM to production methods. One of the most basic practices is consultation with the customer early on to find the cost-saving opportunities in the part. "If the aim is lightweighting, assembly consolidation or speed to market, we can win," Higgins says. Manufacturing supplier Ryerson, which is approaching two centuries in business, recently joined this production startup as a key investor.
